This blog was born out of my own frustration with the lack of information for immigrants in Korea, rather than temporary expats. Things like home ownership, starting a business, labor law, and access to resources are so important for us, but no one is talking about them.
I love Korea and decided in my first few months here that this would be my forever home. However, I’ve felt that information gap grow bigger and bigger as I’ve taken strides further out of the expat circle and into the immigrant one. Much of the information available in English is geared toward E-2 or F-6 visa holders, or it’s directed at people who aren’t in Korea. I struggled to find my house, to apply for my F-2 visa, to open my business checking account, and many other things.
On the other hand, I found it very easy to register my business with the tax office! It was even easier than others had painted it to be because I did it online, while most people go to the tax office. I also discovered how to take a number for the bank queue in my banking app so that I didn’t need to wait as long after I arrived. Within a few weeks of having my first bank account, I had already set up Kakao Pay and automated my bill payments.
A lot of foreigners are intimidated by the language or just aren’t aware of how many things they can actually do here. Since I grew up button-smashing game controllers, I’ve done the same thing with my phone since I picked it up from SKT. Now that I don’t have to struggle (as much) anymore, I want to share what I know to make your lives easier, too!
